Independent electoral and boundaries commission chairman, Wafula Chebukati has stated that Gubernatorial elections in Kakamega and Mombasa counties have been postponed.
He took it to the media to state that , Independent electoral and boundaries commission officials have been receiving threats and their lives were no longer safe.
He stated that, the fracas that was witnessed on monday at the Bomas of Kenya has made the IEBX officials to fear for their lives.
He said,”This has instilled fear within the staff who are now unable to report to the office for duty. This harassment must stop forthwith.
He therefore declared that the elections have been postponed to a date that will be communicated in a gazette.
He said,”In view of the prevailing circumstances, the Commission has postponed the by-elections slated for 23rd August 2022, to a date to be announced through a gazette notice.”
Chebukati also demanded for arrest of the people that assaulted the commissioners that were in the Bomas of Kenya.
Independent electoral and boundaries commission,Officials namely:Abdi Guliye, Boya Molu and CEO Marjan Marjan were assaulted by certain people that we were in company of the politicians.
He said,We call for the arrest and prosecution of these assailants regardless of their political affiliation.”
Earlier, independent electoral and boundaries commission chair, Wafula Chebukati had postponed the voting process in certain areas.
Not Only Mombasa and Kakamega counties , but also areas such as
Kitui Rural constituency in Kitui County, Kacheliba constituency in West Pokot County, Pokot South constituency in West Pokot county and Rongai constituency in Nakuru county.
Further, elections for Member of County Assembly in Nyaki West in North Imenti constituency in Meru county and Kwa Njenga in Embakasi South constituency in Nairobi County were also postponed.
The political mood has brought up alot of conspiracy stories that were witnessed.
