Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza faces nepotism and favorism accusations.
Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza was yesterday summoned by the ethics and anti- corruption commission.
This comes after Hon. Kawira appointed her husband, Mr. Baicu as the county youth patron and hustlers’ ambassador and went ahead to hire her sisters as the personal assistants.
EACC wrote,”It is reported that you have employed two of your sisters to public office, one as your personal assistant and another as security personnel.”
The letter further highlighted that Kawira directed the county staff to work for Baite TV, a media station owned by her family.
She also forced county workers to use their social media pages to promote her own political interests.
The Anti- graft body also questioned on why she allowed her husband to attend official county meetings and issuing directives to county employees.
EACC wrote,”Further, reports indicate that Mr Baicu has been attending official county meetings and issuing directives to county employees yet it is not clear whether he is a public officer.”
“While the information within our knowledge is that Mr Murega Baicu will be performing his duties without pay, we find this inconsistent with this provision because the office he occupies is a public office within the meaning of this article whether or not he draws a salary,” EACC added.
Last week, Kawira clashed with the members of county assembly, who threatened to impeach her. If the allegations are true, Kawira will be facing serious integrity charges.
EACC stated,”The Commission notes that these allegations constitute serious ethical issues and if true would amount to a serious breach of the integrity and ethical requirements governing the conduct of State officers.”
