we will ban Mitumba.
Speaking at Changamka Shopping Festival, Cabinet secretary, Moses Kuria CS, stated that the government is working on empowering the local textile industry.
He however pointed out that, second hand clothes will be banned after an alternative has been formulated in the country.
He said,” I will work with the textile industry to ensure that we make cheaper clothes available in this market, and then we will ban Mitumba when we give people an alternative.”
“The price we are selling to clothes to America is much lower than Mitumba so it is not a question of price it is a question of availability,” he added.
During the campaigns, Moses Kuria protested Azimio la Umoja leader’s plan to ban mitumba inorder to empower the local textile industries.
Raila in his manifesto stated,”Our people are only wearing mitumba, clothes that are coming outside the country, that are worn by people who are dead. We are going to go to primary production so that our people who are importing mitumba can have good products to sell here.”
Kuria at that time, stated that the Orange democratic movement leader, was out to take small businesses home.
However, Moses Kuria’s sentimens has sparked a huge debate on the socials.
One tweep commented,”The government is considering banning mitumba and revitalizing the textile industry to increase jobs from the current 50,000 to 5 million within the next five years ~ Moses Kuria.Well, when , Raila Odinga said this, President Ruto and Kuria were the first to condemn him!”
Another tweep posed,”Why can’t they just revive the textile industry, create the so called job opportunities and let those who prefer wearing mtumba clothes continue doing it. It’s not like mtumba importation is duty free or like it’s not an employment opportunity for others.”
Another one expressed,”Mutumba killed local textile industry… The benefits of a stable textile industry are greater than what mutumba is providing.”
