No one wears Mitumba out of their will- Kuria defends his remarks on Mitumba banning.
Trade cabinet secretary, Moses Kuria has come out to defend his remarks on banning second hand clothes, popularly known as Mitumba.
Kuria stated that his words were misinterpreted but he has no regrets trying to empower the Kenyan textile industry.
He added that his plan is to increase consumption of locally made clothes hence cutting down the number of Kenyans buying mitumba.
He said,”I want to see a Kenya whereby every Kenyan can afford to buy new clothes… I want to see those people wearing clothes made here in Limuru that are affordable. I have no regrets about that.”
Speaking on wednesday at the commissioning of Tilisi ALP facility in Limuru, Kuria further stated that Kenyans are forced to wear second hand clothes because of poverty.
He added that his ministry will oversea creation of jobs in the textile industries inorder to curb poverty and promote the textile industries.
He said,”Nobody wears mitumba out of their will, they wear it because they don’t have enough disposable income, because they don’t have alternatives and because they don’t have jobs.”
