Government will no longer fund public universities and colleges.
Education cabiney secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, has stated that the Government will no longer fund public universities and colleges.
CS Machogu instead, has urged the higher institutions to generate their own-sourced revenue to fund their operations and academic programmes.
Speaking at the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri, education cabinet secretary Ezekiel Machogu called on public institutions of higher learning to embrace research, innovation and technology to generate income.
He said,” I am going to move around each and every university in Kenya because a number of our universities are faced with problems particularly finance.”
“You get them complaining about underfunding and we are encouraging that they must generate their own revenue because as it is now , the government is not going to be able to continue funding more.”
He added,”in Kenya, education takes 25.9 per cent so we have to find other ways for generating revenue for universities and they have to look at other revenue streams.”
