Uproar as Kenyans call out the government for intending to withdraw university funding.
During his visit at Dedan Kimathi university of technology, Education cabinet secretary announced that the government will no longer fund colleges and universities.
Machogu said that its high time the tertiary institutions find their revenue streams because the government is now overstretched.
Machogu said,” I am going to move around each and every university in Kenya because a number of our universities are faced with problems of finance.
“You get them complaining about underfunding and we are encouraging that they must generate their own revenue because as it is now, the government is not going to be able to continue funding more,” he added.
However, his words have sparked a huge debate on social media; An Uproar as Kenyans call out the government for intending to withdraw university funding.
Senator Ledama Olekina tweeted,”Public Universities mean they get funded by the Public period. Whatever this government is smoking needs to be checked! This we will not allow! Any member of parliament who will pass a budget without public university funds should be recalled by the public.”
Makau F Muli reacted,”On my view stopping funding of universities is a bad move. We can’t have money to fund political parties and not have money to fund education. We must get our priorities right.”
Victor reacted,”You will find CS machogu he seems to be laying failures to universities by trying to withdraw HELB which is most Crucial source of income to comrades.”
Dr. Andrew Githiria said,”Kenya Kwanza in one week.
CS Health: “Kenya is the only country where Med Interns earn more than actual Doctors..”
CS Education: “We will no longer fund universities and colleges..”
CS Trade: “We will ban mitumba…”
CS Transport: “KQ pilots are testing the new administration..”
Donald Kipkorir said,”Public Institutions & Public Officers are “PUBLIC” because they are funded or their salaries are paid from State Coffers. When Education Minister says State will stop funding Public Universities, same should apply to all Public Institutions & Public Officers including him.”
Hon. Kaluma said,” I will not support the so called Hustlers Fund.
I will instead support free education from Primary to University as Baba @RailaOdinga had promised.
Education, not free money, brings the poor up.
Not funding Universities will increase school fees.
CBC is bad for the poor.”
