UDA legislators propose to revise presidential term limit; basis of age not time served.
A proposal that has sparked a debate on social media.
According to the United Democratic Alliance members of parliament, a president should retire from his seat upon old age not the time he has served.
Fafi member of parliament, Salah Yakub noted that some UDA lawmakers are working on a constitutional amendment Bill to revise the two-term limit and replace it with an age limit of 75years.
He added that what is remaining is for the proposers to sit and draft the constitutional amendment Bill and forward it to Parliament.
His sentiments were expressed at a food drive in Garissa county.
Yakub said,”We want to tell Kenyans that the limit on two terms should be relooked. We want it to be changed to an age limit where when one gets to 75 years then he or she cannot contest”.
“We will come up with an amendment Bill to try to change this because we want the requirement to be on age limit and not terms. If a president is doing a good job, then he or she should not be limited by the terms,” he added.
If this bill goes through, it means that president Ruto who is aged 55 will be the head of state for the next 20 years.
However, UDA legislators propose to revise presidential term limit agenda, has not sat well with some of the netizens.
One tweep commented,”Such ideas or plans should be terminated with extreme impunity.
Term limits are meant to ensure bad leadership doesn’t continue in perpetuity in a democratic state. Even when the compact majority is placing toxic leadership at the helm of the nation.”
Another one added,”Laughable yet sad. We saw bbi fail with 10 billion spent, with the support of government and the opposition, massive bribing from MCA’s to MPs and yet reggae stopped. Who do you think can believe this kind of nonsense?”
