They were arrested when they were in the process of offloading the batch of goods from a lorry to a rental house in Rodi Kopany trading centre.
According to preliminary reports, the batch was part of the drugs purchased by the county government at Sh20 million.
The drugs were packaged in 185 cartons and destined to various health facilities in Ndhiwa and Rachuonyo North sub-counties.
The authorities got a tip off from the residents, led by Homa Bay sub-county directorate of criminal investigations officer Monica Berege, they acted swiftly to arrest the suspects.
Berege said,”Residents became suspicious with a lorry that was being offloaded. They thought they were bricks but they realised they were several cartons of drugs.”
Acting county health chief On Saturday, Kevin Osuri stated that the drugs were supposed to be delivered to various health facilities but some individuals diverted them to their house.
Osuri said,”These are part of the Sh20million drugs we procured from MEDS. They were supposed to reach the health facilities from November 11.”
“The drugs were being diverted to unknown place during delivery. They had not reached our health facilities,” he added.
He further stated that MEDS should now give them a new order, because the one confiscated are under investigations.
Osuri said,”MEDS must give us fresh drugs as we procured because we have not received our order.”
Homa bay governor, Gladys Wanga has stated that anyone found with illegal trading of government meds, will be taken under custody.
She said,”Any medic found engaging in drug pilferage will be sacked. You either shape up or ship out.”
