Let’s standardize uniforms- Shollei on Education cost.
Let’s standardize uniforms- Shollei opinioned in her interview on citizen tv today. She stated that it’s high time the ministry looks into the school uniforms issue.
She stated that the cost of uniforms has been a huge crisis in the parents’ pockets since the schools opened.
She stated,”We have to bring the cost of education down. The cost being charged for food is quite high. Some are above the normal rates. There is a bit of game being played by headteachers. The cost of uniforms to is too high for the parents to afford. What happened to the good old days when I could go to mitumba and buy a pair of black shoes?”
“Let’s standardize uniforms. Parents can’t afford a pair that costs more than Ksh1000 while she can get a similar shoe at Ksh300 at mitumba. Why should we have to buy tracksuits, fleece, sweaters, several ties, short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts and trousers?” she questioned.
Gladys additionally urged the leaders in various constituencies to rise up and identify students who are having difficulties in joining school; by working with the head teachers, this students can be helped.
She stated,”The best hack is to work with headteachers in primary schools because they know the needy students, their families, their homesteads can even tell you that this child misses school because of lack of food so if you use headteachers in primary school, they will flag the children to you even before they exams are done.”
Her uniform concern comes after Trade CS, Moses Kuria also questioned on why there is a compulsory need for uniforms in Kenyan schools.
He stated,” In America, there is no uniform. How is the School uniform with a competency-based curriculum (CBC)? It is not a necessity. The Ministry has sent a circular and the Ministry will send another circular today to the schools that parents have got absolute freedom and discretion on where to buy uniforms.”
