The first female MP and Mayor, Grace Onyango has passed on.
Heartfelt Condolence message have trickled in as the first female MP in the National Assembly and Mayor of Kisumu dies.
Taking it to his social media accounts, President Ruto condoled with the family of Grace Onyango. He sent his tribute saying that Grace was a pace maker, who made more women to earn their space in politics.
The head of stated wrote,”My condolences to the family, friends and people of Kisumu following the passing of Grace Onyango, the first female mayor of Kisumu and the first woman member of Parliament in Kenya.”
“Mama Grace was a trailblazer who opened the door for the participation of women in political leadership. She was a woman of great courage, deep patriotism and unflinching courage. Her legacy will endure through every elected female leader for generations to come,” he added.
On his part, Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga stated that Kenya has lost a towering giant and an icon in Mama Grace Onyango!
He wrote,” Nyabungu as we fondly called her illuminated independent Kenya political landscape with a stride of ‘firsts’ It was common to expect ‘ the first African woman something’ tune every time her name was mentioned. She was a leader and a trailblazer to the hilt.”
“ A trained teacher, she was fearless articulator of national issues, astute defender of her roots, lone voice of the wanainchi at a time when it was eminently fatal to stand up and be counted.For this we celebrate her into immortality.”
