MPs back motion against the LGBTQ community.
MPs back motion against the Lesbians, gays, bisexual,transgender and queer community.
They proposed that anyone found practicing or supporting sex of the same gender should be punished accordingly.
The were supporting a motion that was brought forward by Nyali MP Mohamed Ali which seeks to prohibit public debate on LGBTQ.
The National Assembly deputy Majority Leader and Kilifi North MP Owen Baya called for a law that will amend very severe punishment for the community.
They stated,”“I would be better that the Honorable member proposed changes to the Penal Code to stipulate stiffer penalties for those engaged in same-sex relations since this matter is already provided for.”
Citing Article 33 of the Constitution,Lawmaker Baya noted homosexuality is against family values that are highlighted in the law and the constitution has already outlawed same-sex relationships.
He stated,“Let us not engage in an exercise that has already been provided for in the law, the constitution has already outlawed that, we cannot come here to purport to limit freedom of expression.”
However, Nakuru East member of parliament, David, stated that this motion seeks to punish this community which is not right.
He stated,”The motion is about providing for tough sentences for those who are practising the same sex-relationships.”
Kitu south MP, stated that this punishment is the way to go, because supreme court was wrong to rule in favour of the community.
The lawmaker stated,”These are threatening acts that must not be allowed in society.”
“Those who are practising these things start regretting their actions, the debate is gathering steam in villages and are debating this issue because it is being talked about a lot…let us say no,” she added.
Luanda MP also supported the motion saying Kenya is a God fearing nation.
He stated,”Let us say no to LGBTQ in this country that is God-fearing, this debate should not be allowed among the country’s population.”
“We are saying it is a no go zone. We are a God-fearing country, we say no to LGBTQ,”Amina added.
