Kenyan government sells part of Turkana wind power to a U.S company- President Ruto confirms.
Speaking with delegates at the American Chamber of Commerce Regional Business Summit in Nairobi, president Ruto confirms that the Kenyan government sells part of Turkana wind power.
A project worth sh. 90 billion that was launched by the former president, Uhuru Kenyatta, Lake Turkana Wind Power Project (LTWP) is one of the largest in Africa.
According to statistics, In 2022, it produced over 20 per cent of Kenya’s electricity.
President Ruto stated,”Kenya is a global leader in clean energy solutions. US companies are big investors in Kenya and East Africa’s off-grid sector, with over 40 per cent market share. These companies are providing millions of people access to the life-changing benefits of power.”
“In the past year, these companies have provided more than 860,000 Kenyans access to off-grid connections and worked with industry leaders to raise more than Ksh16 billion (USD120 million) for the sector’s development. US company d.light alone will support at least an additional 600,000 households to access clean energy solutions,” Ruto added.
The president has also revealed that, Symbion Power, another American company, was closing an underway deal to build a geothermal plant in the Rift Valley.
He stated,” I am also delighted that plans are moving forward for Kipeto 3, a new 50-megawatt grid-connected wind power plant with an integrated battery storage component.”
President Ruto further stated that During the American Chamber of Commerce reinforces our relationship that stands firmly on the sound foundation of shared values, including commitment to liberty, democracy and free enterprise.
Other deals signed by president Ruto include; Del Monte, the largest private sector employer in Kenya, investing Ksh773 million ($5.5 million) in a new state-of-the-art fresh fruit packing facility, which is part of the diversification programme.
Del Monte plans to get pineapples, avocados, mangoes and French beans from farmers in Murang’a, Kiambu, Machakos and other counties which will cover about 2,000 local farmers.
