Why a salary increase proposal for top government officials- SRC chair explains.
The 14 per cent salary increase by the salaries remuneration commission for top government officials, has raised an uproar all over the social media.
With netizens complaining of the tough economic times, others argued that it is not fair for top government officials to have a salary increase as those in the bottom of the pyramid are suffering.
But why a salary increase ? The SRC chairperson , Mengich explains that Covid-19 had affected the salaries review but now things are back to the way they were before.
She added that this review was part of a cycle that was stopped, when covid- 19 hit the country and everything came to a stop.
She stated,”SRC set a four-year review cycle and we are now in the third review cycle. There was a salary structure freeze due to Covid-19. The commission has now reviewed the Salaries as required.”
However, yesterday during the unveiling of digitized government services, President Ruto turned down the proposal.
The head of state however, highlighted that salaries of teachers, police officers, KDF officers and other civil servants will be increased by 7-10 per cent effective July 1.
He stated,”I know there is a proposal by SRC for the increase of salaries of different cadres of both civil servants and other public servants. Because of the economic times we live in, we have approved that salaries of other civil servants can be adjusted beginning tomorrow.”
