This comes after the head of state lifted the ban on logging, that was put up by The former president, Uhuru Kenyatta.
President William Ruto cited that logging will allow for mature trees to be harvested and give room for new healthy trees. He also argued that this will be a job opportunity for youths across the country.
President William Ruto stated,”Over the next 10 years, we shall grow 15 billion trees and restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded forests and rangelands.”
Speaking at a meeting in Marsabit with the Community Forest Association, CS Tuya outlined that they will start the crackdown at Mau forest. This will enable them detect any illegal activity that might be hatched.
She stated,”People who imagine that our forests are available for encroachment should forget it. We have started an operation, starting in Mau, a place called Sururu and we will go to all forests.”
“We can’t be pushing for the growing of 15 billion trees while at the same time losing more trees to illegal activities. We can’t be engaged in a zero-sum game,” she added.
She further revealed plans to fence all gazettes forests, as a way of protection and accomplishing the forest cover Kenya kwanza aims.
She stated,”The first thing we’ve done as a Ministry is to map all forests across Kenya. We’re looking for partners to back up Government funding for fencing of all forests across the country.”
