Kenya Transporters Association, KTA urges Matatu Saccos to facilitate NTSA driver tests which costs Ksh1,050 that are mandatory.
KTA chairperson, Newton Wang’oo,argued that the saccos needs to bear the cost because drivers are already struggling to make ends meet, with the unbearable cost of living.
The statement read,”As an association that values the well-being of drivers, we advise that we collectively, as employers, bear the cost of driver retesting charges for each of the drivers in our employment once every three years on humanitarian grounds.”
The chairperson further outlined that driver really need this support if the Matatu industry is to prosper.
He stated,”By investing in their well-being, we are not only supporting them but also safeguarding the future of our industry.”
KTA also stated that this move will portray employers’ commitment to the driver’s welfare and uphold the spirit of compassion and empathy.
This comes after the National Transport and safety Authority, announced a mandatory retest for all drivers countrywide, to help identify rogue and unroadworthy drivers.
The drivers are expected to retake the test after every three years to keep them up to date with the requirements of the road safety rules.
However, If by any chance someone fails, they will be required to do a refresher courses at a licensed driving school before being tested again.
