It will be a body count of the people who are supporting the cause- Karua explains.
speaking during an interview, Azimio la umoja deputy Principal, Martha Karua clarified the reason why the opposition is collecting 10 million signatures.
She stated that the signatures are not meant to impeach president Ruto, but to show the country that all citizens are in support of their cause.
She also stated that through the signatures, the government will see the grievances that Kenyans are seeking.
She stated,”Since there is no place big enough to hold a general meeting of the Kenyan public, we will hold as many meetings as possible across the country. The people will hold their own referendum of signatures. By the time we hit the threshold of 10 million, we will know majority of Kenyans are speaking. It will be a body count of the people who are supporting the cause.”
Martha Karua outlined that the opposition is only interested in four things; Finance Act, 2023, pursuit of electoral justice, respect for multi-party democracy and equity in the appointment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission selection panel.
The issue of signature collection has been a trending topic on the socials. This comes after Azimio ally, Eugene Wamalwa stated that the exercise had officially kicked off to reject Kenya kwanza.
Wamalwa stated,”We the people of Kenya will commence a signature collection exercise which will signal our willingness to reject Ruto’s government. This exercise will take many other shapes and forms until we shall push Ruto out of power.”
However, Okang’o who is the Azimio la Umoja spokesperson stated that the signatures are not meant to impeach Ruto.
He stated,” We are not seeking for impeachment but for delegitimization and withdrawal of the sovereign delegated powers.”
