Former Kakamega County Governor, Wycliffe Opranya details his Highway arrest after being released yesterday evening.
The Azimio ally narrated that he was ambushed along the bungoma- Kisumu highway. He stated that law enforcers who were dressed in civilian, stop his vehicle at Khayega, arrested him and took charge of the car.
Oparanya was escorted to the police station, where he recorded a statement on the use of a government vehicle during the prohibited protests. The former governor lamented that he was being treated like a criminal, for protesting which is a right in the constitution.
He stated,”At the station, the DCI boss demanded that I write a statement and I declined. So my lawyer wrote a statement on the same.”
According to His lawyer, Ken Echesa, Oparanya was put in danger and police had risked his life, by blocking his care on the highway.
He outlined that in as much as Oparanya was released unconditionally, his car was still detained in the station.
Echesa stated,”They are accusing the governor of leading demonstrations in Busia. They have released him unconditionally but detained the car. We are giving them 24 hours to return the car because it is his entitlement.
Before his release, Yesterday Evening Azimio la umoja leader released a statement demanding for immediate release of Oparanya, Mavoko Member of parliament and others who were arrested because of demonstrating.
The statement read,”Among those in police custody is Mavoko MP Patrick Makau and as we speak we have just learnt of the arrest of Oparanya. We demand the immediate and unconditional dropping of all charges against these two for participating in a constitutionally protected action.”
