NEMA gives 6 guidelines on expected El nino Rains.
The National Environment and Management Authority, has warned of potential heavy rains that are likely to occur in the near future.
The warned all people residing in flood prone areas, to move to combat the rate of Mortality, experienced in Previous years.
The notice read,”In previous flooding incidents, urban areas have experienced clogging of the drainage infrastructure by waste, especially from pack-aging, textiles and diapers among others.”
“This exacerbates the flooding menace leading to loss of life and property. Further, post-consumer waste degrades our wetland ecosystems such as rivers, lakes, swamps, and oceans among others,” read the notice part.
On matters clogging, County Governments have been advised to clear all drainages as a flood-preventing measure.
The notice read,” All project owners should ensure that they adhere to the conditions of the Environmental Impact Assessment licenses issued by the Authority as well as the Environmental management plans submitted to NEMA.”
“Operators and owners of any facility storing chemicals to take appropriate measures to prevent flood water getting into contact with the chemicals,” read the notice in part.
Companies were also warned to take care of their sewer lines, failure to do so, they will be held accountable.
