Traffic Police arrested for demanding ‘forgiveness fee’ inorder to release a detained Vehicle.
Ethic and Anti- corruption commission has exposed a corrupt traffic cop, who was trying to extort a motorist.
The officer based at Kakamega, was arrested following a complaint from matatu operators in Kakamega county.
EACC stated,”Kakamega Officer Arrested for Extortion. Following investigations into a complaint from matatu operators in Kakamega County.
”EACC on Friday arrested Monyenye Dennis Marunga, a Traffic Police Rider, based at Kakamega Police Station who impounded and detained a matatu and ordered the complainant to pay him a “forgiveness fee” in order to forgive him and release the detained vehicle,” read part of the statement.
This is not the first time, the officer had extorted a matatu operator. It is reported that it has become a usual thing, for him to impound and detain vehicles, then later demand a release fee.
EACC stated,”The suspect, famously known as “Denno” within the matatu industry in Kakamega, has allegedly developed a specialization in arbitrarily impounding and detaining public service vehicles, without cause, and thereafter demanding money from the victims, as a condition for releasing the detained and unbooked vehicles,”
“Prior to this arrest, the Commission had received numerous complaints against him. He was processed at EACC Bungoma Regional Office and later booked at Bungoma Police Station pending further action,” EACC added.
Meanwhile, the Commission is working with the Office of the Inspector General and other Government Offices towards addressing the challenge of corruption and extortion on Kenyan roads.
