Kenya moves towards universal digital access; Launches Locally Assembled Devices.
Kenyan telecommunication companies on Monday opened the first local phone assembly plant.
The Athi River-based East Africa Device Assembly Kenya Limited (EADAK) comes after Kenya kwanza promised to establish a local smartphone assembly with a capacity to produce up to 3 million units every year.
According to EADAK’s chairman Joshua Chepkwony, The Local smartphones will retail at ksh. 7,499.
They detailed that the mobile phones will be the 4G-enabled Neon 5-inch “Smarta” and 6-and-half-inch “Ultra; They will be available countrywide at Faiba shops, Safaricom shops and the Masoko online platform.
The CEO of Safaricom stated,”The launch of EADAK reaffirms our belief in the power of connectivity to transform lives and drive economic progress. This partnership underscores our relentless pursuit to expand 4G access and empower Kenyans through affordable, high-quality smartphones, create employment opportunities and grow our economy.”
On his part, President William Ruto stated that Going digital on a large scale across every sector. It will spur growth and catalyse the actualisation of our development agenda.
He stated,”The local production of affordable smart devices moves Kenya towards universal digital access, combining the freedom and opportunity of connectivity with the affordability of local assembly. Expanding digital access will bring millions of Kenyans into the digital economy.“
