Israel- Hamas war to cause fuel hike this festive season- CS Chirchir
Energy cabinet secretary, Davis Chirchir has revealed that Kenyan should brace themselves for higher fuel prices that were triggered by Israel- Hamas war, even as the festive season approaches.
The cabinet secretary was speaking at the National dialogue committee, where he outlined that there is a possibility that Kenyans will pay upto ksh300 at the pump.
He stated,” I read an article in the Financial Timesthe other day that because of the Hamas and Israeli War, the international prices could go up to USD150 and that would literally mean our products going to a high of Ksh300 at the pump.”
He further responded to questions from the committee, on how the ministry is cushioning Kenyans against the ever rising fuel prices.
CS Chirchir answered,”So we are almost managing scaling the heights as we chew the gum every day to make sure we do manage this frame,”
”These are products which are real drivers of inflation so we are consciously working on it on a day-to-day basis to make sure that although it’s a global challenge, we do obtain the best prices for our country,” he added.
A litre of petrol that was retailing at at Ksh177 per litre at the start of the year, is currently retailing at ksh217, the highest price ever recorded in the history of Kenya.
This came after The removal of the subsidy and upward review of Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel from 8 per cent to 16 per cent.
