El nino Rains Worsen; Over 80k Households affected as Death toll hits 61.
El nino Rains worsen: In Tana River County, Residents have been urged to move to higher safer ground, far from the flooded areas that have swept away their homes, their belongings and their livestock.
In Bondi village, residents are worried that the fast rising water levels will flood their homes. According to videos, women, children and men are making the hard decisions to move from their homes and areas of residences.
Kenya Red Cross details that since the rains started in October, 80,518 households have been affected, with nearly half of this amount displaced, Businesses, health facilities and schools have also been affected as the rains continue to flood parts of the country.
The death toll is currently at 61, while 235 people have been reported injured and other eight are listed as missing.
Among the missing eight include two KRA employees whose vehicle was swept away in Lunga Lunga, Kwale County as they were traveling to Mombasa.
According to the government, El Nino rains are now affecting 33 counties, up from the 19 that were listed.
According to records, Areas of northern Kenya are the most affected. In Wajir, entire town has been submerged, schools, health facilities, and police stations have been rendered inhospitable and lives endangered by impassable roads and landslides.
As a mitigation measure, The government has underway plans of unclogging of waterways, moving to higher ground, and the release of funds by counties to aid in mitigating the El Nino effect.
