DP Gachagua changes tune on counties receiving 10Bn El- Nino Fund, says such money is not coming.
Yesterday, The second in command called out Governors from flood- affected counties, for neglecting Kenyans despite receiving sh10Bn El- nino from the National government.
Gachagua posed,”Why are you keeping money idle in the bank? Every Governor whose county has been affected by floods… suspend any other development activities and provide food, medicine and blankets for the people. Once this crisis is over we shall go back to development issues. What is the purpose of the development projects you are doing if people are dying? If the people die, who will the projects benefit?”
However, Speaking today at the development partnership forum, The deputy president of Kenya, DP Gachagua changes tune on County governments receiving 10Bn El- nino Fund.
He stated,”We are shocked to see governors complaining that they are yet to receive money for El Nino from the national government; such money is not coming. We expect them to use emergency money within their financial provision or reallocate money within their budget to intervene for the people they govern.”
Yesterday, Governors such as Abdulswamad were quick to call him out and highlight that no money has been disbursed.
Mombasa Governor stated,”There have been claims that the National Government has released 10 billion shillings for El Niño response to the counties. For the avoidance of doubt, despite the challenges, the County Government of Mombasa has managed its disaster response from our own source revenue and with the support of the Red Cross, other Non-Governmental Organizations and independent entities with goodwill,”
“Parliament and the Controller of Budget should investigate these claims of disbursement of 10 billion shillings and clarify to the people of Kenya where this money actually went because it did not come to the counties,” he stated.
