Former Kanduyi MP Lawrence Sifuna is dead.
Former Kanduyi MP( Formerly Bungoma South) is dead: The late Lawrence Sifuna also served as Bumula Member of parliament.
He was pronounced dead on Sunday morning by the ODM party. He is a paternal uncle to the ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
ODM party wrote,”We commiserate with the family of our SG Edwin Sifuna, friends and relatives following the loss of the Hon. Lawrence Sifuna. Hon. Sifuna was a Life Member of the ODM party. May his soul RIP.”
Background Story: He was first elected as a legislator on November 8, 1979, in the then-larger Bungoma South constituency. He was re-elected in 1983.
In 1988, he lost the seat toformer North Eastern Provincial Commissioner Maurice Makhanu, during the General Election after Bungoma South constituency was renamed Kanduyi.
He however, got the seat back during the first multi-party General Election of 1992 on a Ford Asili ticket.
He was also one of the left-wing members of parliament in the 1980s (a.k.a. the seven bearded sisters) who persistently fought Attorney General Charles Njonjo on matters human rights.
