Inadequate Career Guidance has led to low University Transition rates- CS Machogu says ahead of KCSE Release.
In a speech read by Meshack Opwora, the Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Education cabinet secretary, Highlighted that inadequate Career Guidance has led to low university Transition rates.
He stated,”Much more ominously, the Economic Survey indicated a transition rate of only 30 per cent from secondary to post-secondary education over the last few years leaving a substantial 70 per cent unaccounted for,”
“The low transition rates to vocational training, technical institutions, and universities have exacerbated youth unemployment in the country, currently standing at 67 per cent compared to the national unemployment rate of 12.7 per cent,” he added.
He also outlined the crisis in the country’s employment gap saying that the youth account for 12% of the unemployed yet they are the most productive population.
A research done by CDAK on career alignment, also revealed that 66 per cent of graduate respondents believed they were in the wrong career.
Only seven per cent felt they were in the right career, while 27 per cent were uncertain.
Machogu stated,”Professional career guidance will assist learners in all stages of transition within CBC from Junior school, Senior school, Colleges, TVETS, Universities unto the world of work school, to tertiary to the world of work.”
