MPs are Frustrating War on corruption; Ethics and Anti- corruption commission chair, Bishop Oginde spoke on Saturday during the commemoration of the international anti-corruption day.
In this year’s Anti- Corruption day, The commission outlined the achievements, milestones, challenges and opportunities in the fight against corruption in the country.
Meanwhile, The chairperson expressed the kind of Frustration they are receiving from members of parliament in their fight against graft.
EACC Chairperson Bishop David Oginde questioned the sincerity of MPs in combating corruption, highlighting the recent bills that compromise anti-corruption efforts.
The chairperson also outlined proposed amendments aiming to remove the legal redress for procurement breaches and transfer them to administrative actions.
He stated,“When we observe how some of us respond to the fight against corruption, it leaves us with an impression that we are merely playing games and corruption is not a serious matter.”
The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly stripped Clause 19 of the Conflict of Interest Bill 2023, which had restricted public officers from trading with any State entity.
The chairperson stated,”There are attempts to water down the Conflict of Interest Bill to allow public officers to continue trading with the government.”
The commision Chair called upon all stakeholders and the arms of government to collaborate and cooperate in preventing and curbing corruption and unethical conduct in the Country.
