We will not get rid of the Housing levy because many are depending on the project- Ruto
We will not get rid of the housing levy: Speaking at the Diaspora Investment Conference 2023 in KICC, Nairobi, President Ruto stated that the affordable housing project, courtesy of the housing levy, will not be abolished because so many people have confirmed that they are depending on it
He stated,”The housing project, complete with the percentages of the housing levy was in Azimio’s manifesto but when it comes to implementation, that is where the devil lives.”
“When somebody tried to say that we should get rid of the housing fund, many people opposed and said for the first time they have jobs and have an opportunity to own a home. The cheapest home in town is ranging from 2 and 3 million. We have brought it down to half a million,” he added.
He further expressed the kind of change he will bring to Kenya, that it won’t be recognised by anyone who visits the country.
He stated,” I promise you Kenya is going to change, take it from me, 10 years from now people will come to Kenya and they will not recognise it.”
His sentiments comes days after the high court suspended the housing levy, effective January 2024.
However, Kikuyu member of Parliament, Kimani Ichungwah who is also the Majority whip, rectified the housing levy proposal and presented it in parliament again.
