For every 10 shillings I collect, 7 shillings go to paying debt- Ruto says
Speaking to the media, President Ruto highlighted that he has had to make difficult decisions, but get Kenya to a better place, in the past one year.
He stated,” Our economy today is out of debt distress and that is the truth. If I wasn’t President, the kind of decisions I have made, very difficult and painful decisions but it is better we make those decisions now than get Kenya into debt distress. We are not out of debt distress, our economy is stable.”
“When I came into office, people were queuing in petrol stations for fuel, now nobody is queuing in any petrol station, we have continuous supply. Half the fuel companies had closed down, today every company has fuel,” he added.
He further highlighted how the country is managing taxes, as Kenyans keep complaining of how high they have become.
He stated,”For every 10 shillings I collect, 7 shillings go to paying debt which William Ruto did not accumulate. The 3 other shillings we have to pay our children to go to school, we have to manage our health, our security and we have to pay our teachers and manage everything else.”
” I promised in the context of where we are, if things had stayed constant, I would have kept my promise. It is better for me to be brutally honest, we may have made a commitment but because the situation changed, the prices of commodities went up.”
He added: What the world has done and which Kenya we are doing is to manage inflation, to manage money supply because if you do not manage inflation, you’ve run into a lot of problems. The government of Kenya spent almost 400 billion Kshs in supporting the Kenya Shilling so that it does not go to its actual exchange rate.”
