Workers unions decry The rampant layoffs and Denial of Christmas off: Kenya National Food Alliance Workers Association (KNFAW) and Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) officials have condemned the increasing cases of job layoffs and mistreatment of workers by employers.
Speaking as representatives from the North rift, Rodgers Ombati and Peter Odima of COTU, went ahead to outlined that some employers are also barring workers from joining unions.
They stated, “Some think we are still a colony. Kenya is a country where the constitution allows all workers to join unions without discrimination.”
“Workers should also be given off days on Christmas or be paid overtime,” they added.
Notably, they highlighted that some companies are practicing favouritism and classification of employees in their premises.
They further challenged all workers being victimised or mistreated at their jobs to report such acts for action to be taken against the employers.
