There was nothing like handshake gov’t, neither was I in gov’t- Raila talks.
Speaking to the media, opposition Leader Raila Odinga highlighted the assumption of a handshake government, between him and former president Uhuru Kenyatta, was never there.
Raila highlighted that him and Uhuru agreed to shake hands on the basis of a memorandum of Understanding signed after disputes were settled
Raila stated,”A lie repeated several times becomes the truth. There was nothing like handshake government and every Kenyan knows that,”
”We only agreed to shake hands with Uhuru Kenyatta on the basis of a memorandum of understanding that we signed after the disputes. I was never in government neither did I appoint a minister or a permanent secretary,” he added.
Raila pointed fingers saying people talking of Handshake government, were the ones in government. He questioned what ‘their’ work was in government.
Raila posed,”The people who are talking about the handshake government were the ones who were in government, they were earning salaries and then they are saying the government was broke. What were they doing in that government?”
He added: We with Mr Kibaki when we came to the government in 2003 we found an almost bankrupt Treasury. We did not blame Mr Moi, we just decided to move on and we initiated measures to improve the economy. When these people are talking about debt, you need money to pay those debts. Increasing tax is not the only way to raise revenue, you can raise revenue without increasing taxes and this is what we did.”
