News Just in: Mombasa County closes Down Bamburi Cement: The company temporarily shut down its operations following an order by the Mombasa County Government on Monday.
The county government cited that the company has dumping coal dust in open dust which has caused discomfort among the residents.
Mombasa County Deputy Governor Francis Thoya accompanied by officials from the National Environment Management Authority of Kenya (NEMA) on Monday visited the factory’s premises as a way of getting answers to the concerns raised by the locals.
Officials were left with no option other than to order immediate closure of the factory after finding out that coal dust was being openly dumped instead of being stored in silos as had earlier been recommended.
Thoya stated,” I have ordered the operations of dumping the coal to be halted immediately and further ordered that their shipment at the port of Mombasa be withheld immediately.”
“The residents had complained to us demanding to know what action we were going to take, We have done our investigations in partnership with the Public Health and we realized that for the last two months, Bamburi cement has been depositing the dust here,” he added.
Notably, the County government highlighted the factory has to give a way forward on how the will deal with the coal dust before it opens again.
He stated,”They should come with draft regulations on how this coal dust can be eliminated or stored in silos, and this order begins immediately. They deposit their coal dust in their land though in the open, something which is abnormal.”
