Auditor General exposes 12 Counties Employing Over 90% of Staff From One Community: A report from Nancy has highlighted that most counties have not adhered to Section 7(2) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act, 2008 which provides that no public entity shall have more than 30 per cent of its staff from same ethnic community.
The counties are; Nyandarua, Machakos, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Kisii and Nyamira.
The Auditor General revealed that Baringo County Governor Benjamin Chesire Cheboi was identified as having employed the highest number of employees from the same ethnic group.
She underscored that 97 per cent of the workers employed during the year under review were from the dominant ethnic community.
Notably, other governors such as Wavinya Ndeti and Erick Mutai were found to have employed 97 per cent of employees from their own community.
The report read, “The County Executive recruited a total number of 271 new staff during the year. However, the staff number comprised of 260 members of staff from the dominant ethnic community in the County forming 96 per cent of the new staff composition.”
Further, Governor Nyandarua Governor was found to have employed 2,264 out of 2,373 employees from his community.
In Nyeri, Nancy reported, “Review of personnel records provided revealed that the County Executive had 92 per cent of its workforce from the dominant ethnic community.”
Same thing in Kirinyaga, The governor has employed 2,255 out of 2,448 from the dominant ethnic community.
In Uasin Gishu, 93 per cent of staff are from dominant community likewise in neighbouring Elgeyo Marakwet where 95 per cent of staff are from same ethnic community.
Bomet County: 97 per cent, Kakamega County 91 per cent, Kisii County: 94 per cent and Nyamira County: 94 per cent.
