TikTok Takes Down 296,000 Videos From Kenya Amid Ban Threats: TikTok’s Public Policy and Government Relations Director, Fortune Sibanda, has revealed that thousands of videos from Kenya were pulled down, as of last year.
Fortune was speaking before the National Assembly’s Public Petition Committee after Alarm was raised on violent, vulgar and explicit sexual content in some of the tik tok videos.
He stated,” In the last year, we have taken down over 296,000 videos from Kenya alone. Around the globe 96.7 per cent of harmful content is taken down before it is reported, while 77.1 per cent of content is taken down before garnering any views.”
Sibanda further explained that tiktok itself has its own mechanism in which they can detect an explicit content before it is consumed.
He stated,” The AI is programmed using internationally set policy standards. The content is thereafter forwarded to human moderators conversant with the countries’ languages and culturally accepted policies,”
“These policies, he states are guided by the local partners who help shape what is culturally accepted in different countries,” he added.
This comes after citizens expressed worry on the inapproriate content therein, therefore calling for ban of the App in Kenya.
For instance, A petitioner by the name Ben Ndolo cited that the app will wash away Kenya’s cultural and social values.
