Kenya Flags Sale of a Batch of ‘Toxic’ Cough Syrup : Kenya’s pharmacy board has recalled a batch of cough syrup which has been reported to be contaminated with a toxic substance.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) affirmed that they had received an alert that the medicine could lead to deeath if consumed.
Kenya’s drug regulatory authority highlighted that it was acting on the advice of the Nigerian food and drug agency.
They revealed that they had detected an unacceptably high level of diethylene glycol in a batch of Benylin Paediatric in 100ml bottles and issued a halt in Nigeria on Wednesday.
Some of the effects of ingesting diethylene glycol according to the poisons board include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, altered mental state and acute kidney injury.
However, Johnson & Johnson, who is the manufacturer of the syrup in South Africa, has not yet said a word.
