Raila Faces Fresh Obstacle as Another African Country Fronts New AUC Chair Candidate
Raila Faces Fresh Obstacle: Azimio la umoja Leader Raila Odinga had faced yet another obstacle after Seychelles announced a new Candidate in the AUC Chair Race.
This comes days after Djibouti and Somalia have also fronted their own candidates.
In a statement from the Seychelles Foreign Affairs Department, it was revealed that the East African country would endorse Vincent Meriton who previously served as the country’s Vice President and Foreign Minister.
The statement read,” The Foreign Affairs Department wishes to announce that the Government of Seychelles has endorsed the candidature of Vincent Meriton for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) in the election scheduled to take place in February 2025,”
According to Seychelles, Meriton was the Favourable candidate for this seat since he spent his political career championing Seychelles’ position on the Blue Economy on the international stage.
In the statement, Seychelles noted that if their candidate wins, he would improve the implementation rate of the Commission’s executive decisions by bringing down any walls blocking implementation, promoting accountability and compliance.
Raila Odinga was the first person to show interest for the seat. Somalia also fronted ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam Followed by Djibouti who nominated their Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Youssouf for the same position
