Governor Responds after Ruto Declares Muguka Ban Null and Void: Pictures have circulated online where Kilifi County askaris seize and burn muguka, arrest traders in operation to implement ban of muguka in the county.
This happened moments even after President Ruto met up with leaders from Embu where he underscored that the recent Ban by Counties is Null and Void.
On his part, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has revealed why he has declared a fight against the sale, supply and consumption of muguka, across the county.
Nassir outlined that Muguka is too easily available in the area and is owed to cases of mental health problems.
When asked about other drugs such as heroin, he said that even though it is been abused in his domain, the power to tackle it lies with the national government and not the county government.
Nassir asked the national government to fight drugs, especially heroin with the same zeal and enthusiasm he is fighting khat with. He stated that banning muguka is not the end of bringing sanity and order to the county.
President William Ruto has said the ban imposed on muguka in Kilifi and Mombasa counties is null and void.
In a statement, President Ruto stated thar muguka is a scheduled crop in accordance with the Crops Act 2013 and the Miraa Regulations 2023.
The Miraa Regulations Act were passed by the National Assembly and the Council of Governors in concurrence of the council of governors.
Having been passed by parliament, Ruto said the regulations obligate the government to allocate funds for its farming, licensing, promotion, regulation, transportation, aggregation, selling, marketing and export of the crop.
