EPRA Announces Adjustment in Electricity Prices: The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced an increase in the cost of electricity per kilowatt hour (kWh).
According to EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo, electricity sourced from several power sources, would be subjected to a Fuel Energy Cost Charge of up to Ksh3 per kWh.
“Pursuant to Clause 1 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023, notice is given that all Prices for Electrical Energy specified in Part II of the said Schedule will be liable to a fuel energy cost charge of plus 359 Kenya cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in June 2024,” reads part of the notice.
In the gazette notice, The factors considered in the calculation of the charge include; the fuel price in May (Ksh per kilogram), the fuel charge in May and the number of units produced by the plant in May.
Power stations affected include the Kipevi I, Kipevu III Diesel Plants, Rabi Diesel With Steam Turbine, Rabai Diesel Without Steam Turbine, Thika Power Diesel Plant, Olkaria IV Steam Charge, Okaria I Unit IV and V Steam Charge, and Sosian Menengai.
Notably, all power generators including KenGen, Kenya Power and the Independent Power Providers will be charged a forex adjustment rate.
“Pursuant to Clause 2 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023, notice is given that all Prices for Electrical Energy specified in Part II of the said Schedule will be liable to a foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment of plus 176 cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in June= 2024,” the Authority added.
Meanwhile, electricity sourced from hydro-powered dams will be subject to a Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy of plus 1.83 cents per kWh.
