Data Protection Commissioner Issues Stern Warning to Online Protesters Sharing MPs Phone Numbers.
Data Protection Commissioner Issues Stern Warning to Online Protesters: The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has cautioned Kenyans against sharing personal information, such as phone numbers, on social media platforms.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the commission highlighted a recent trend where individuals are consolidating and sharing critical personal details of specific groups of citizens online.
Authorities emphasized that this practice violates data protection laws and policies.
According to The Data Protection Act 2019, a civil registration entity is mandated to seek consent from a data subject for processing personal data at the time the personal data is collected.
This comes after the majority Leader, Kimani Ichungwah expressed that he has faced harassment together with his counterparts, on matters Finance Bill 2024.
He stated,”I know many of these members including myself we have suffered a lot of harassment. I was asking the leader of minority whether he has suffered the same and he told me his phone is worse. Many of these Members of Parliament, you cannot reach them on their phones, they have blocked their phones including Whatsapp,”
“Many of the amendments that have been proposed by the finance committee cure the numerous concerns that Kenyans had over this Finance Bill. Let us do what is right, I know there are those who are tempted to do that which is popular. It is very popular to join street demonstrations, to be seen as the hero rescuing people from police stations but as leaders, we must do what is right,” he added.
