MP To Table Motion Requiring Referendum To Impeach President, DP, Governors
Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji now says he will table a motion to amend the impeachment law by making it mandatory to carry out a referendum before ousting a President, Deputy President, Governors and their deputies.
He was Speaking at NICA Church in Manyatta during the ordination of five lay leaders, where he underscored that the electorate must be given a chance to impeach holders
The lawmaker gave an example of the tribulations facing Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, saying it is unfair for a leader elected by millions of voters to be impeached by a few “selfish leaders
He further argued that the Constitution is being misused by lawmakers who want to settle personal scores with elected leaders to oust them from office.
“I will table a motion to change the law on impeachment so that when someone is being impeached, the voters speak in the form of a referendum,” he said.
“We must change the impeachment process of even Governors. You have all seen the troubles bedevilling Mwangaza in Meru; her only mistake ni kukosana na wadosi kidogo.”
