Webuye West Member of Parliament (MP) Dan Wanyama has been summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over incitement remarks pointing towards the Mountain region.
In a notice released on January 27, the commission directed the legislator to present himself at their headquarters on Wednesday, January 29, at 10 am to assist in investigations of the matter.
On Sunday, January 19, during an Interdenominational Prayer event at Cheptais Boys’ High School in Bungoma County, Wanyama made remarks which were called out as discriminatory.
“The Mountain is already slippery and will remain slippery forever. If we all come together we can isolate them. It will be us against them. I have no fear in saying that,” MP Wanyama stated
According to the NCIC, these remarks incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence, or discrimination and affect harmonious coexistence between groups of different political affiliations in Kenya.
His remarks were followed by an uproar from Mount Kenya leaders as well as other Kenyans as they came at a time when calls for national unity are the order of the day.
The NCIC called out a section of politicians who had resorted to making hateful speeches at public rallies.
The NCIC Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu stated that they had concluded investigations against the accused lawmakers including Oscar Sudi, Farah Maalim, and Dan Wanyama, and forwarded their files to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) calling for their arrest.
Nyutu stated, “We have more than 10 politicians who have been using language that can incite Kenyans. We have even completed our investigations and forwarded the files to DCI and if the DCI does take the next step which is to arrest and charge these criminals and the DPP takes them to court and there is prosecution, we will have made progress.”
