Police in Nairobi have launched investigations into a shocking incident in which a police officer attached to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed allegedly shot and killed a civilian in Kawangware.
The officer is said to have fired multiple shots at 35-year-old Amos Lagat, hitting him in the stomach and chest at close range.
According to witnesses, the altercation began after Lagat won a bet at a local pub in the Amboseli area, agitating the officer, who had lost.
Lagat is reported to have succumbed to the injuries after he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he passed away upon arrival
The incident, however, took a different turn after the accused officer rushed to the police station and recorded a completely different statement claiming that he was accosted by robbers.
According to the officer, three men accosted him while walking home at around 8.00 pm on Sunday, prompting him to shoot in the air to repulse them in defense.
Additionally, he claimed that one of the men took his Ceska pistol before he recaptured it and shot in the air.
”One of the men struggled and snatched his Ceska Pistol s/no. F4899 but he took hold of it by the muzzle and eventually recaptured it back. One of the men blocked him and he shot severally in the air to scare them,” the report read in part.
The bodyguard claimed he sustained an arm injury during the incident, while the deceased’s body was moved to Chiromo as investigations began.
The officer was disarmed and hospitalised, as police planned to revisit the scene, gather witness statements, and review any available CCTV footage.
