Passport wait time revised- CS Kindiki outlines.
Speaking at Harambee house today, Interior cabinet secretary, Kithure Kindiki indicated passport wait time revised, to avoid delays.
He highlighted that a 24-hour timeline would apply to those with medical and education emergencies.
He stated that the directive will start working aa from the last week of June 2023 after the Department of Immigration clears the current backlog.
He however, detailed that other applicants, will get their passports within seven days after application, instead of a month plus in the previous applications.
He stated,”We will clear the backlog in 21 days and from that day, we will make sure that anybody that applies for a new passport must get it within seven days and if it is classified as an emergency situation, the person must get it within 24 hours.”
The cabinet secretary detailed that the government had to effect this directive because of the complaints from the passport applicants who had waited for months to get the documentation, which has caused a lot of inconveniences.
He stated,”We have 42,000 applicants, some of who have waited for six months. I plead for patience. Within seven days, we will restore the broken equipment. We have in excess of 60,000 booklets that will help us clear the backlog.”
The CS further stated that there will be administrative changes because of the multiple reports of bribery hence corruption during the application process.
The CS also revealed that some of his men were on a fact-finding mission in the department where they uncovered the unprofessional misconduct of some of the officers.
