Deliberate strengthening of cooperative societies- President Ruto.
Speaking at During Ushirika Day at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi, the head of state outlined the need to strengthen cooperative societies.
While in the company of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Cabinet Secretaries CS Chelugui (Cooperatives and MSMEs) and Wahome (Water and Irrigation), among others, the head of state highlighted that this will be a way to grow our economy.
He stated,”The deliberate strengthening of cooperative societies will help in the formalisation and mainstreaming of marginal and informal sector entrepreneurs. This move will accord them access to training and affordable credit to support their businesses, hence tackle poverty and accelerate our economic growth.”
On his part, The second in command stated that the cooperative societies have been effective in growing the country’s economy for decades.
Apart from economic growth, the deputy president outlined that cooperatives have helped In bringing Kenyans together.
He stated,”The Cooperative Movement has been a catalyst of our country’s economic growth for decades. Even in the midst of myriad challenges, the Movement has remained strong and steady bringing Kenyans together in the sacred duty of building our nation and improving their lives,”
“To keep it stronger, we will work with the lawmakers to amend the Cooperative Societies Act to make it accommodative of the Movement’s modern needs,” he added.
Notably, the CS Chelugui highlighted that they are working to ensure Kenyans are benefiting from the same.
He stated,”Co-operatives and Saccos are the wheels that drive the economy and it is for that reason that H.E President William Ruto created a stand alone ministry for this sector. We will work hard to ensure that the sector becomes vibrant again so that Kenyans can reap full benefits.”
