The country mourns the death of Prof Micere Mugo; Details.
In a press release, President William Ruto stated that The country mourns the death of Prof Micere Mugo, a Kenyan scholar and activist.
The head of state wrote;
I join the people of Kenya in mourning the passing of Prof Micere Mugo, a celebrated Kenyan scholar, teacher and activist and to celebrate her many wonderful achievement for which she is rightly recognised as an iconic trailblazer and inspirational pioneer.
Prof. Mugo set the bar high in championing socially involved and politically conscious scholarship, which extended the struggle for freedom and sovereignty to the academy, ensuring that Kenya’s African majority were seen and heard where it mattered.
Her struggle called for extraordinary courage in confronting entrenched hegemonic practices and ideologies, which served the purpose of anchoring the reactionary strategies of the postcolonial power establishment. Prof Mugo undertook her agitation with fierce determination, unshakeable courage, captivating imagination and boundless grace.
In so doing, she paved the way for many generations of Kenyan intellectuals and freedom fighters, including many women academic, civil society, political and corporate leaders to pursue and achieve true equality in every sector of national endeavour.
The progress we have achieved in social justice, inclusion and gender equality is due, to a considerable degree, to the selfless commitment and brave sacrifices of extraordinarily individuals like Prof Mugo.
I encourage Kenyans to honour her legacy by doing their part in ensuring that we see in our freedom countless opportunities to make this country great.
