Londiani is a wake up call for Kenya – Makau Mutua.
Speaking through his social media account, Makau Mutua stated that the governments should start rethinking illegal hawkers occupying roads and road reserves.
Using Church Road/Raphta Road as an example, Makau opined that hawkers have made roads impassable because of the littering and collection points for muggers.
He stated,”Illegal kiosks and hawkers on our roads/road reserves. Litter, garbage, debris. Collection points for muggers, unruly boda boda, Uber drivers. Roads are impassable. Londiani is a wake up call,”
“We need proper planning and rational infrastructure, not chaos and mayhem. Traffic rules must be enforced. Without law and order we have no country,” he added.
Sharing the same sentiments on roads, was lawyer Miguna Miguna who stated that Kenyan roads need revamping.
Miguna stated,”In North America, almost all roads are WIDE, well constructed and run in STRAIGHT LINES: North/South and East/West. Most intersections are controlled by functioning TRAFFIC LIGHTS. Everyone operating a motorized vehicle must undergo and pass STANDARDIZED written and road tests before Drivers’ Licenses of different GRADES are issued.
“Traffic police closely monitor traffic including by air and are authorized to SUSPEND drivers’ licenses of operators of vehicles while drunk, on drugs, using mobile phones, without valid drivers’ license and/or those operating unroadworthy vehicles. Taking bribes or offering one gets the receiver (police) or the one offering (driver) 10 years in jail. These and other practical ways are the only means to prevent road carnage in Kenya,” he added.
