Ruto lifts ban on logging amidst forest cover strategies, Gives reasons why.
Speaking at during a Thanksgiving service at Molo, Nakuru County, President Ruto lifts ban on Logging.
The ban on Logging was put up six years ago by former president Uhuru Kenyatta, as a way to prevent cutting down and destroying tress.
The ministry of forestry at the time, cited that they were reassessing and rationalising the entire forest sector in the country in an effort to save main water towers.
Today, It came as a surprise since the head of state has been vocal about Planting trees and increasing the forest cover.
The president explained that old and decaying trees need to be cut down, in order to allow for healthy trees to grow.
He stated,”People are struggling on where to get timber, yet trees are decaying in forests. We have lifted the ban so that we can harvest mature trees.”
The president highlighted that the logging exercise will be for the benefit of the country. He warned anyone with an intention of importing trees, that the government would heavily them.
Mixed reaction however, have emerged from netizens all over social media.
One tweep wrote,”Local newspapers quote Ruto as “Master of double speak” and they are not wrong at all. On international spaces he preaches about climate change while at home he is degazeting forests and lifting ban on logging of forest trees.”
Sue wrote,”So sad to see the ban on logging being lifted. I was hiking in Kamweti Forest on Mt. Kenya a few weeks ago and the sight was disheartening. Having been there in Dec 2020, the scenes of the trails and forest were shocking.”
