Sugar and Tomato prices increase as the cost of living rises- KNBS reports.
According to a report from Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) , sugar and tomato prices have gone up. They reported a price increase despite a 0.1 % inflation decrease between May and June 2023.
The report wrote,”Consumer Price Indices and Inflation Rates for June 2023 ” shows that the prices of Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages commodities increased by 10.3 per cent attributing to the 7.9 per cent inflation rate.”
“The inflation was largely due to an increase in prices of commodities under Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages (10.3 per cent); and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other fuels (9.4 per cent); and Transport (9.4 per cent) between June 2022 and June 2023,” read part of the report.
Other commodities such as carrots and maize grains, have also gone up. For instance, Carrots that were being sold for Sh111.28 rose to Sh121.29 while a Kg of tomatoes rose to Sh111.66 from Sh104.98.
A kilogram of Maize grain loose increased by 5.5 per cent which led to a Sh10.52 increase on a 2kg packet of fortified maize flour currently retailing at Sh202.98.
Further, The reports indicates that the price of sugar increased by 5.4 per cent within the same period leaving the price at Sh202.98.
A kg of Irish potatoes now goes for Sh101.41 from Sh107.98 in May. A Kg of Kale, avocadoes and cabbages are now being sold at Sh57.07, ShSh77.00 and Sh58.40 respectively.
However, prices of potatoes, avocado, kale (Sukuma wiki) and cabbages declined by 6.1, 4.6, 2.7 and 0.3 per cent, respectively.
Notably, The prices of a 13kg LPG gas cylinder decreased by 1.8% with the market price at Sh3,069.
