We urge the IG to issue a public apology to Mwangaza- CoG speaks.
The Council of Governors has urged the Inspector general of police, to Issue a public apology to Meru County governor, Kawira Mwangaza.
This comes after the governor was arrested but later, They cited that it was a mistaken identity. The council has highlighted that this poses an image of huge embarrassment, inconvenience, public humiliation, and ridicule to their colleague.
They stated,”The action of the police demonstrates a disturbing pattern of attacking and intimidating Governors. Governors are elected state officers and heads of county governments who are well known to the public. The case of mistaken identity therefore presented by the police is laughable.”
“We urge the IG to issue a public apology to Mwangaza for the embarrassment. We urge the police to refrain from being used to settle political scores and rely on facts and objectivity in the execution of their duties,” they added.
The Council of Governors, further wants action to be taken against the police officers, that were involved in the arrest of the governor.
Notably, They urged the Ministry of Interior to look for better collaborative measures to avoid such unfortunate eventualities in the future.
CoG stated,”We wish to note that there are existing National Government structures, like the county commanders officers that can be used to call upon Governors to present themselves to the police whenever a need arises.”
“We strongly condemn bullying and intimidation and retaliate that the Governor’s office must be respected,” they added.
Mwangaza had stated that the police had detained her, on grounds that were not verifiable.
She stated,”It is disheartening to witness needless curtailment of development efforts meant to help the vulnerable in our community. Such intimidation should not be allowed to obstruct progress in the Meru community.”
