Commitee on Mackenzie case hands in report, gives a no. of proposals
In a report by the senate committee led by Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, they proposed that the only way victims can be compensated, is freezing assets.
The report read,”The Director of Criminal Investigations and the Director of Public Prosecutions initiates the process of freezing the assets belonging to Paul Mackenzie and any of his associates and the proceeds be used to compensate the families of deceased victims.”
The senators also proposed that Good News International Ministries and Good News Media organised criminal organizations should be shut down within days of adoption of the report.
Notably, the report pointed fingers towards senior police bosses, including the former County Police Commander Jecinta Wesonga, former Malindi Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC), Senior County Criminal Investigation Officer and Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit boss.
Others include former Malindi, Langobaya Officers Commanding Station (OCSs) that took part in the Shakahola Massacre.
The report read,”The Committee observed that due to a warning by the county security committee in 2022, Paul Mackenzie changed tact and minimized his radical teachings. He claimed to be a farmer, that he was no longer associated with the church or preaching.”
“Evidence availed to the Committee indicates that the Kilifi County Security Committee had prior knowledge of Paul Mackenzie’s activities but failed to act on the information,” read part of the report.
The commitee recommended that the police service should impose sanctions within 30 days after the Senate adopts the report.
However, The committee expressed their disappointment that the Interior cabinet secretary, saw it fit to transfer the officers instead of sanction.
“The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration should facilitate the survivors to regain their vital documents such as National Identity Cards, Birth Certificates, Title Deeds, Academic Certificates and Marriage Certificates which were destroyed as a result of the indoctrination,” read the report.
