A very sad Friday: Tragedy as 8 people are washed away by floods in Makueni.
Indeed it is a very sad Friday in Makueni County. In an incident that happened on Thursday night, families are currently mourning the loss of their kin.
A report from the eyewitnesses detailed that the eight attempted to cross the Muuoni river, which was already overrun by the floods, at around 10pm.
The eyewitness told the media that the eight insisted on crossing, despite the fact that multiple residents of the area, were unable to cross over to the other side and reach their homes at night.
The river was already overrun by the floodwaters, which led to the unfortunate incident.
Kenya Red Cross Makueni County coordinator Evans Peter has revealed that they have since deployed a rescue team to search for the bodies.
Kenya red cross has since issued a warning message to all people in Flood affected areas, to move to higher ground.
Kenya red cross stated,”Rains from higher areas may cause floods in your area. Move to safer grounds if you notice rising water levels. Call Red Cross on 1199 for inquiries.”
This comes a week after the Kenya Met Director, Gikunyu warned that the El- nino rains are expected to continue upto next Year January.
The member of parliament for Dadaab, Farah Maalim urged President Ruto to declare El- nino a National Tragedy.
Farah stated,”President Ruto should declare El Nino rains a national disaster. I know DP Gachagua was a one-time MP before he became the deputy president, but for God’s sake, he should do better than that. He shouldn’t run his mouth the way he is doing right now in regard to El Nino funds.”
